New Scientist is running a story about an attempt to replace the hippocampus with a computer chip. Assuming it works, there are some metaphysical questions that must be asked, as well as some other stuff.

Secular vs Religious
Posted by Robert on the 7th of March, 2003 at 2:49 AM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: sH Deep Forum, somethingHollow
A NYTimes article asks what should we do when secular leader's claims contradict those of religious leaders. Or more forthright, should Catholics back the Pope (pacifist) or Bush (warmonger)*? Is the envoy-of-God's word more important than the conservative-Christian-leader-of-your-nation's? I realize there are more theists on this discussion board than atheists, so I pose this question under related assumptions. I suggest skimming the article before posting...

Is it Art?
Posted by Robert on the 26th of January, 2003 at 8:52 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: sH Deep Forum, somethingHollow
The NYTimes is running an article that asks the question: If a computer creates something beautiful, is it art? The article centers on playing chess, and whether it is an art or a math problem. Obviously, computers process chess differently than humans (and not just chess, but everything). That's the difference between a neural network that runs pattern recognition and a number cruncher that runs probabilities.

Mormon Proxy Baptizing Jews
Posted by Robert on the 12th of December, 2002 at 7:49 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: sH Deep Forum, somethingHollow
Few may know about the Mormon doctrine of proxy baptizing. The gist is that a living Mormon can stand in for a dead person, presumably a Mormon's dead relative, and be baptized so that the dead can become Mormon. Kind of like Jesus going to Hell during the three days to tell all the newly damned souls about himself so they may be saved... except totally different.

I guess this is an alternative to big bang (free reg. required). It basically covers theory of a multiverse and relates it to bubbles within bubbles. It partially debates how much of our universe is "chance" and how much is "planned"...

It seems that the Baptists can't stop picking on Muhammad. Falwell says he thinks Muhammad was a terrorist. This is added to the Southern Baptist Convention's accusation that he was also a pedophile.

Convoluted Logic Behind Berman
Posted by Robert on the 25th of September, 2002 at 10:28 AM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: sH Deep Forum, somethingHollow
Representative Howard Berman, a Democrat from Cali. who is backed financially by groups like the RIAA and the MPAA, has introduced a bill that would allow copy-right owners to take preventative measures against individuals sharing their work on peer-to-peer networks without permission from authorities and without fear of repercussion. Such attacks can't harm the user's computer, but we all know what happens when normal people DoS for kicks.

One More Down

I wasn't going to say anything about it; the media has overloaded us with enough pointless facts, rehashed testimonies, and violent images to last 4 or 5 life times. However, I was in a position to actually consider the consequences of the events that occurred September 11, 2001.

Cable TV
Posted by Robert on the 3rd of June, 2002 at 11:50 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: sH Deep Forum, somethingHollow
My current question centers around a little article from C|Net News about free cable. Apparently, by splicing the coax line going to the cable modem with an inexpensive splitter you can get from Radio Shack (though apparently not their website...), you can get free basic analog cable, saving $40 USD. My concern is this: If AT&T Broadband left the flaw, is it okay to take advantage of it?

Hate Games
Posted by Alex on the 23rd of March, 2002 at 2:24 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: sH Deep Forum, somethingHollow
I never thought I would believe a time would come when I would agree with a news broadcaster claiming video games have gone to far. For many years I've always made the claim that games are purely entertainment, and not some technique used to show that murdering monsters and evil Nazis is what we should to in real life for fun. However I happened to catch a segment on the news discussing hate games. It turns out a game on the Internet has sold many copies with a title something along the lines of Race Purifier (forgive me for not knowing the full title). The game is a first-person shooting game (which I do enjoy playing many first-person shooting games). However instead of your average monsters, aliens, nazi's, or any other evil fantasy creature, or monster from the history, they've focused on ethnic. Your enemy's include blacks (either smoking marijuana, or wearing gold chains and shirt that says 'big nigga' on them), Jews (according to this game all Jews are Rabbis), and Latino's (wearing sumbaro's). To top this all off, your not only doing this to make the world a better place but your a KKK member as well. Hey this sounds a little like Hitler from Alabama. The creator of the game, which apparently spent many hours creating, is a white supremacy leader when showing the news crew he joked that it took place in New York to pay some respects to those who died. What the hell is this guy thinking? Afterwards I thought about how I can go along and play Grand Theft Auto for hours and not even feel guilty running over people with cars and shooting up innocent victims only to make skid-marks of blood on the street with my car. Yet, this game becomes a lot more personal stereotyping different races. Did I mention that the 'big boss' in the game is the Prime Minister of Jerusalem. I think what really gets me is after September 11th (I hate bringing that date up) the last thing we need to do is to create more of a racial ruckus.

Camp X-Ray

Photos were released over the past weekend showing war prisoners being detained in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. One displayed them in goggles, ear covers, and chained really drew the attention of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Invoking a response from Rumsfeld, the reports are that the prisoners are served 3 meals a day, given air foam mattresses along with a prayer mat and PA calls to prayer to address religious concerns. All of this and each prisoner is housed in his own 8x8; cell. The part amiss to me is the concern for these fighters of the Taliban regime. It's known to everyone millions of innocent people will starve, freeze to death, die in Afghanistan this winter. While in Cuba it's between 60 and 80 degrees, very comfortable temperatures. I don't believe there shouldn't be any concern for these prisoners, but I don't think it should be a concern to provide them with daily exercising time, raisins, and a protective shelter for attempting to murder people who were standing up for their fellow Afghans' peace and freedom. Here is CNN's latest report.

Burn The Witches

CNN is running an article on burning Harry Potter books along with other books (like Shakespeare) and albums/ouija boards. This kind of fascism is something I'd expect out of Nazis. Apparently, the Christ Community Church sees Harry Potter books as some sort of instructional guide on how to become a witch/wizard/warlock. Frankly, the youngest kids reading the books really can't grasp the concept of God, let alone real witchcraft. If anything I would think they would see it as fiction, and thus portray witchcraft as fiction in their minds. After all, we don't see any big cats running around bipedal with red and white striped hats on, do we? And no kid expects to.

Religious Right figureheads, such as Franklin Graham, son of Billy, and Pat Robertson hailed this to be a great awakening in America. It seems, however, that people fell back to sleep. The gist of the article can be summed up in two insightful quotes.

The Double Standards I Feared

When I heard that Israeli forces were going to assassinate Palestinian terrorists and terrorist supporters, I had the "fear" of Bush condemning the anti-terrorist actions, perhaps claiming them as terrorist acts themselves, when not long ago, Bush proposed that we drop the unwritten policy to not assassinate rival political rulers or otherwise compromise a rival nations security.
