Comments Trial Period

When I created this site, I wanted it to be all valid markup. In order to do that, I killed off user comments. I didn't want to, but it was the best I could do. To substitute, I decided to cross-post to LiveJournal and MySpace. I decided to try something new.

The New Site (again)
Posted by Robert on the 11th of September, 2005 at 6:20 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Robertdot, Web Design
I think I got hasty. Well, maybe not. I just needed more motivation. Last week, I spent a great deal of time getting the site built. Then, once the front end was "done", as typically happens, my interest wanes. So, I decided to put the front end up before I got too bored coding the back end. Right now, I'm posting in PHPMyAdmin. I won't be able to keep this up. The administration is partially written, but I started taking short cuts, so I'll probably rewrite it. And I think I didn't fully make use of some classes as well as I should have. So, I'll be fixing those at some point.

S710, New Site, Wyborowa, Haiku, Etc.

There is always some amount of construction going on in Los Angeles. Since L.A. isn't confined by natural borders, the first inclination was to sprawl. This is why L.A. is so large, and is slowly assimilating areas that used to be distinct towns (e.g. Hollywood, Santa Monica, Compton). Essentially all of L.A. county is part of L.A. city, as far as I can tell. When New York City hit its boundaries, it started growing vertically upwards. L.A. seems to take a different approach. All the building projects I've seen recently grow vertically downward before they grow upward...

More Moods, Bug Fixes, Monster Shows
Posted by Robert on the 27th of December, 2004 at 11:37 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Robertdot, TV
Shortly after I moved to LA, I posted a list of moods. The idea was to capture a mood and give 3 variations of the mood (weak, medium and strong). I mentioned quite a few, and tammy threw in a few moods. Some of Tammy's I added variations to and included in my new list. The new list is now available under the mood selector. But, I won't pretend it's complete. If you've got any ideas, feel free list three variations of a mood if I left it out.

Code Revision
Posted by Robert on the 19th of December, 2004 at 2:38 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Robertdot
The majority of the code revision is done. I've uploaded what I have, and I'm pretty sure it works. I added the tracking system and the error alerts, as well. So, if you find a bug, let me know. Ummm... I dunno. My brain is still a little flipped around from the drinking last night, so I'm gonna watch TV instead of try to think.

Code Revisions And Tammy's Film Asylum
Posted by Robert on the 15th of December, 2004 at 10:57 AM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Personal, Robertdot
The code revision of this site is coming along well. I managed to combine most of the SQL that renders the posts into one query and clean up how I connect to the database. In the process, I am trying to create a login function so that I can re-use the code on the login page and the post form. I ended up royally breaking login/logout functionality when I did that. After I get that fixed, I need to get the post / preview working. Then I'll only have a few more functions / concepts to revise. I'll probably take a break for a few days and add in a few more features I want and clean up the administration interface. Hopefully that break will coincide with the weekend...

The New Site

Okay. So, here is where it starts. Some of the last bit of the blog code consists of quick hacks. I wanted to get this up soon since I've been working really hard on it. It's nice to see something being used that you are working on instead of it sitting around. Refactoring the entire site is on my to do list, so I'll ned up cleaning up most of it in the end.

I went down to Buena Park tonight to hang out with RX8Club guys. I learned that the 710 to Long Beach is a way to get to the OC from LA. So, is the 5. Getting lost isn't ALL bad.

Doors that I can't see may be opening for Tammy. Lets hope that things that we can't control continue to suspected fruition.

The Buccweet cover went off with the printer last night. He also agreed to do my business card. So, I'm working on that. Also, I added the final Buccweet cover to my portfolio.

Ouch

This portfolio site is a real bitch. I think it largely has to do with the fact that my computer is on a 2.5 foot high dresser, my keyboard is on the corner of an open drawer, my mouse is on a shoe box, and my ass is sitting hunkered over (cross-legged!) on the floor. My knees are breaking and my back is cramping and my neck is sore. I neeeeeeed to get a damn table and a chair.

Well, the portfolio site is now underway. It just took awhile to get inspiration. Sort of... I ended up basing it on the current robertdot design. Thanks to Paul for giving me feedback while I whined and cried.

Skipping Movies

We skipped Shrek 2 last night. We just didn't get our shit together, and I didn't have any real drive to see it anyway. Instead we watched Capturing the Friedmans. To me, the documentary was pointing at the same type of hysteria that drove the Salem Witch Trials and, in a later, different sense, McCarthyism. Basically, what I think it comes down to is if you ask questions to kids in a certain way, they'll agree with you. Further, you can convince kids to have false memories. While children have to be trusted to tell the truth, it's hard to do when the police have an agenda. While it is illegal to have kiddy porn, it doesn't follow that owning kiddy porn makes you a child rapist (like looking at gun magazines doesn't make you a gun owner, or looking at porn doesn't make you a "whore"). I'm not saying that looking at kiddy porn is morally permissible, because it isn't (by what form ethics I justify myself, I don't know).

PCs suck. Alex's sucks a great deal less now that it's fixed. I'll spare the details, but it was a tricky maneuver, and J ended up doing a good portion of the grunt work since I left at midnight.

A Long Time Coming

It's been a long time in the making, but here it is. I know, I know. I told some of you I was going to do more of a net.art thing. But, when it came down to it I was trying to decide whether I wanted to make art or communicate. Seeing as everything I was making should have been viewed as pieces of art instead of a cohesive unit, I decided to trash the idea. I may post some of the ones I worked on, if I didn't delete them. But, after all, I used some of them as temp pages...

Redesign

I still don't have all the kinks of the new design worked out. I realize there is a great deal more to do before I should have gone live, but I'm happy with the progress. Thus, you get to see. I still need to add in the "attachment" functionality, as well as work out some kinks with the "html" messages. Sooner or later, I'll get done. I'm not in a giant hurry. I've got a forum to test out as soon as I get around to setting it up, as well as a calendar. I'd like to eventually add replies to blog posts, but that's on the bottom of the list.
