Beyonce's New Album

Is it just me or does Beyonce's new album, B'Day, have a really unfortunate title?

It's Been

It's been a long December and there's reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last... It's one more day up in the canyons, and it's one more night in Hollywood. If you think that I could be forgiven, I wish you would.

Hallelujah Lyrics by Jeff Buckley

I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the Lord,
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift.
The baffled king composing hallelujah.

X11.app Full Screen Background Image
Posted by Robert on the 12th of August, 2005 at 3:40 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Mac, Random, Software
I installed Apple's X11.app to use GIMP on my machine. I'm used to Photoshop, so the multiple window thing with GIMP was a little odd. Unlike other desktops, X11 (or at least Apple's version) does not click on an item on an unfocused window when you click the item. You have to click the window to focus it, then click the item. This made using GIMP a bit of a pain because I had to click 3 times just to change tools (once on the toolbar, once on the tool, then back on the editor). The simple solution was to turn on X11.app's mouse focus (type defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_ffm true
in Terminal.app and restart X11).

Mozilla JavaScript RegExp Test Bug
Posted by Robert on the 5th of July, 2005 at 10:41 AM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: JavaScript, Random
There is what some consider to be a bug in Mozilla's JavaScript engine. Basically, if you run a regular expression with a global switch (e.g. /x/g), JavaScript remembers the last match position. This causes the RegExp to sometimes validate as true, and sometimes as false (alternatingly). The Mozilla guys say it isn't a bug. However, removing the /g solves the problem.

rt2500 freezes gentoo
Posted by Robert on the 30th of June, 2005 at 2:17 AM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Geek, Hardware, Linux, Random
I got a wireless card that uses the rt2500 chipset to use on Linux. After I (finally) got it working (Gentoo Wiki Version for starters and Gentoo Forums to actually get it working), my system would randomly freeze. It turns out that the rt2500 driver does not like SMP / Hyperthreading. So, turn that off in the kernel, recompile, then re-emerge rt2500 if you get an error on the next boot from rt2500 not loading. I'm not sure why I had it on in the first place. Kinda pointless with a P3... Stupid default options.

mod_rewrite example
Posted by Robert on the 27th of June, 2005 at 12:16 AM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Apache, mod_rewrite, PHP, Random, Web Design
At work, we started using a redirect method with mod_rewrite that allowed us to send all file requests to a file called _process_me.php. This gave us tons of flexibility, allowing us to even make pages on the fly. If you can't imagine why anyone would do this, imagine serving a page that doesn't exist, assembled completely on the fly, without the user knowing. If you don't get it yet, press ALT+F4 or COMMAND-Q right now for more information.

Low Carb Pizza
Posted by Robert on the 24th of June, 2005 at 8:23 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Food, Random
I've been low carbing for a month and a half now. I started with chicken as my food of choice, then steak, and then hamburger. I'm starting to get burnt out on hamburger, so I decided to give the low carb pizza another shot. Last time, I came up with a few ideas when I searched the 'Net as well as making up a few of my own. None of them were very successful. Until recently...

Courtney Hansen from Overhaulin

Courtney Hansen is one of the hosts of TLC's Overhaulin (along with Chris Jacobs and Chip Foose). While I'm into newer cars more than older cars, I'm guilty of watching a TV show for the hottie host (Courtney, that is), something I'm sure many people who see this page are guilty of.

Sidewalk Scramble / Film Festival Rejection
Posted by Robert on the 24th of February, 2005 at 1:03 PM GMT0. Permalink.Tags: Culture, Movies, Random
Alex Justinger, one of my best friends, is part of a group called Flypaper. Flypaper makes movies for the Sidewalk Scramble. The Sidewalk Scramble is an event held by the people that bring The Sidewalk Motion Picture Festival (Sidewalk Film Festival) that is designed to keep local filmmakers interested in the local film community. The Sidewalk Scramble is a weekend event. Filmmakers are given 48 hours to complete a film. No work on the film can begin until after the Kick Off. That means all writing, scoring, filming, and editing must be done after the allotted time starts. To prevent cheating, the Sidewalk Scramble implemented an "inspirational item" that must be used in the film. This may be anything from a tangible object that must appear to an abstract concept. The item is disclosed during the Kick Off. This, clearly, is like a check digit on a credit card. While the check digit itself isn't the credit card number (only a part), it makes sure that all the numbers before it are valid. The "inspirational item" makes sure no cheating was involved because a group couldn't possibly guess what the item is and make the film before the 48 hour period.

Amy Aubuchon

Since I'm ranked #1 on Google for Amy Aubuchon (and I've gotten 5 hits to my site because of it), I'm going to try to use my ranking for the good. What is my personal relationship to Amy Aubuchon? Tammy Bellisle got her headshots done at Greg Crowder Photography. While doing research, Tammy looked at all the headshots on his site. One of which was Amy Aubuchon. So, in short, my girlfriend got her headshots done at the same place.

iPod Shuffle Commercial Song : Caesars - Jerk It Out

Update: I've been getting a lot of hits this month that I think are looking for the newest iPod Shuffle commercial song (the one airing circa November 2006). For those of you looking for information about that, it is Who's Gonna Sing? by a French band called Prototype. You can check out their MySpace page if you want to hear the song. It's in French; so, I'm not posting lyrics.

Cory Haim

The Thrills wrote a song called Whatever Happened To Cory Haim?. Terri Psiakis was discussing (in relation to the song) Cory Feildman (who used to hang out with Cory Haim) and the Michael Jackson trial of 2005. I started googling for Cory Haim, and found this question that was probably prompted by the song. It turns out you can just check Cory Haim's IMDB page if you really want to know what happened to him.

El Pollo Loco

El Pollo Loco is a mexican restaurant that specializes in chicken. There are many locations throughout the mid-west / west. I'd never heard of it until I moved out to Los Angeles. At first I thought it was silly. At some point after I started working at ESN, I decided to give it a shot. I was hooked. The #6 combo is awesome, as the value is incredible.

Okay. So, here is where it starts. Some of the last bit of the blog code consists of quick hacks. I wanted to get this up soon since I've been working really hard on it. It's nice to see something being used that you are working on instead of it sitting around. Refactoring the entire site is on my to do list, so I'll ned up cleaning up most of it in the end.

Zombies

I keep having dreams that there are zombies (several to quite a few depending on which dream) in my vicinity in the dream. I've not watched any zombie movies in ages. I've had these kinds of dreams for the past 2 weeks, probably 8 total. Shaun of the Dead is coming out soon and I want to see it, so that might be why. But I don't know why I would dream about a movie that I've seen the trailer of on several occasions. Odd.

It's amazing how much difference 6 lbs makes when you put it on a long metal bar, then pick it up and put it down over and over again.
