Charlie And Rejects

I love L.A. because the speed limit is actually governed by the flow of traffic. The speed limit is as-fast-as-traffic-will-let-you-go-without-scaring-yourself. Sometimes that is 110 MPH. Sometimes it's 5 MPH. It's not like in Alabama where they say go with the flow of traffic but will pull you over for going above the speed limit. That is one reason why I love L.A.

Sidewalk Scramble / Film Festival Rejection

Alex Justinger, one of my best friends, is part of a group called Flypaper. Flypaper makes movies for the Sidewalk Scramble. The Sidewalk Scramble is an event held by the people that bring The Sidewalk Motion Picture Festival (Sidewalk Film Festival) that is designed to keep local filmmakers interested in the local film community. The Sidewalk Scramble is a weekend event. Filmmakers are given 48 hours to complete a film. No work on the film can begin until after the Kick Off. That means all writing, scoring, filming, and editing must be done after the allotted time starts. To prevent cheating, the Sidewalk Scramble implemented an "inspirational item" that must be used in the film. This may be anything from a tangible object that must appear to an abstract concept. The item is disclosed during the Kick Off. This, clearly, is like a check digit on a credit card. While the check digit itself isn't the credit card number (only a part), it makes sure that all the numbers before it are valid. The "inspirational item" makes sure no cheating was involved because a group couldn't possibly guess what the item is and make the film before the 48 hour period.

Cory Haim

The Thrills wrote a song called Whatever Happened To Cory Haim?. Terri Psiakis was discussing (in relation to the song) Cory Feildman (who used to hang out with Cory Haim) and the Michael Jackson trial of 2005. I started googling for Cory Haim, and found this question that was probably prompted by the song. It turns out you can just check Cory Haim's IMDB page if you really want to know what happened to him.

Slowly Moving In

Over the past week, we've been slowly moving into the new place and getting situated. We had our first gathering, which was also our first failed party.

Parallels

In the first testicular cancer scene in Fight Club, the group leader says something like: I look around I room, and I see a lot of courage and that gives me strength. We give each other strength. Then Tyler flashes.

DNS

Something funky is going on with the DNS here at ACCi. If I type robertdot.org or www.robertdot.org, it takes me to ACCi pages. So, I have to type xv.robertdot.org/robertdot to get to the site. I hope that changes sometime. If not, I might have to quit working here sooner!

Harry Potter

Since I didn't hear from anyone other than Paul and Alex before 10:00 PM, I went to see the new Harry Potter. The entire time I questioned my sanity, and I'm not a fan / haven't read the books / not really interested. $8.00 is almost an hours worth of work.

Skipping Movies

We skipped Shrek 2 last night. We just didn't get our shit together, and I didn't have any real drive to see it anyway. Instead we watched Capturing the Friedmans. To me, the documentary was pointing at the same type of hysteria that drove the Salem Witch Trials and, in a later, different sense, McCarthyism. Basically, what I think it comes down to is if you ask questions to kids in a certain way, they'll agree with you. Further, you can convince kids to have false memories. While children have to be trusted to tell the truth, it's hard to do when the police have an agenda. While it is illegal to have kiddy porn, it doesn't follow that owning kiddy porn makes you a child rapist (like looking at gun magazines doesn't make you a gun owner, or looking at porn doesn't make you a "whore"). I'm not saying that looking at kiddy porn is morally permissible, because it isn't (by what form ethics I justify myself, I don't know).

Notes

Last night, after Bennagin's, J and I went to see Troy. Not only did it star several actors from Lord of the Rings, it also rivaled it in length. I was expecting something more on the scale of Gladiator, but was delivered something with ambition that exceeded budget.

Poe(tic)

What an agreeable day this turned out to be. I skipped the whole lunch thing so I could leave work early. I re-installed my shock sensor, which took 1/4 of the time the original did. It works well. I still may need to calibrate it a little more, though. I need to find a tennis ball...

Damnthings

I installed my shock sensor today. The whole thing went really well, and it worked. I was wary of cutting wires in my car, even though I know I could technically splice them back together.

Dawn of the Dead

I went with Alex to see the remake of Dawn of the Dead. All in all, I like the new version better than the original. It is much more intense with zombies that can hunt and kill something that moves faster than an injured turtle. Still, the remake lacks good character development and some action in the film seems random. At least in the original, I had a sense of the characters and I wasn't thrown any curves, such as making a rescue through the secret tunnel / sewer. Alex also mentioned that the characters do some really stupid things in the remake... like try to obtain a dog from across a parking lot of zombies. Not to mention the zombies get "dumber" as the film progresses. At first they are ruthless and agile hunter / killers. By the end they turn into the zombies of the original film, only they can run.
