Hacking Diebold

Google Video is hosting Hacking Diebold. Even if you don't care about elections, from a technical stand point it is interesting to see how poorly written (purposefully or not) the Diebold voting machine software is. I don't know how long it will be available. So, I suggest you watch it now. You can play it inline here.

What's Wrong With America's Voting

I can't help it. I accidentally got sucked into watching American Idol. I hate the show. I watched the first few episodes for a laugh. Then, somehow *cough* Carrie Underwood *cough* found myself watching the actual show. *Sigh* Anyway, that isn't the point.

Sidewalk Scramble / Film Festival Rejection

Alex Justinger, one of my best friends, is part of a group called Flypaper. Flypaper makes movies for the Sidewalk Scramble. The Sidewalk Scramble is an event held by the people that bring The Sidewalk Motion Picture Festival (Sidewalk Film Festival) that is designed to keep local filmmakers interested in the local film community. The Sidewalk Scramble is a weekend event. Filmmakers are given 48 hours to complete a film. No work on the film can begin until after the Kick Off. That means all writing, scoring, filming, and editing must be done after the allotted time starts. To prevent cheating, the Sidewalk Scramble implemented an "inspirational item" that must be used in the film. This may be anything from a tangible object that must appear to an abstract concept. The item is disclosed during the Kick Off. This, clearly, is like a check digit on a credit card. While the check digit itself isn't the credit card number (only a part), it makes sure that all the numbers before it are valid. The "inspirational item" makes sure no cheating was involved because a group couldn't possibly guess what the item is and make the film before the 48 hour period.

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller, my favorite playwright, died today at age 89. Cnn has a eulogy of sorts (though I think they let Marilyn Monroe steal the show).

Church and Party

Well, I went to church today, even though sleep seemed more important. Allegedly, Tammy Faye Baker and Dottie Rambo were going to be at our little Gateway City Church Gateway God Church. Tammy (as in Bellisle) was really pumped to see Tammy Faye for some reason. I personally think she's wacko. But, hey, how many times is Tammy Faye Baker walking distance from where you live, free to the public? Not often.

Skipping Movies

We skipped Shrek 2 last night. We just didn't get our shit together, and I didn't have any real drive to see it anyway. Instead we watched Capturing the Friedmans. To me, the documentary was pointing at the same type of hysteria that drove the Salem Witch Trials and, in a later, different sense, McCarthyism. Basically, what I think it comes down to is if you ask questions to kids in a certain way, they'll agree with you. Further, you can convince kids to have false memories. While children have to be trusted to tell the truth, it's hard to do when the police have an agenda. While it is illegal to have kiddy porn, it doesn't follow that owning kiddy porn makes you a child rapist (like looking at gun magazines doesn't make you a gun owner, or looking at porn doesn't make you a "whore"). I'm not saying that looking at kiddy porn is morally permissible, because it isn't (by what form ethics I justify myself, I don't know).

Bush + 911 Council + Private Meeting = Uh-oh

Bush plans to meet with the 9/11 Council today, behind closed doors, with no records being kept and no oaths being sworn. I don't know about you, but this seems suspicious to me.

Running and Bush

Speaking of running, why can I go for a run after 3 months of not running and run better than I did when I ran every day? Dad says it's because I was burned out. I reckon that is true, but still. I ran a full 2 minutes faster on my 2 mile.

Random Notes

I wanted to comment on how funny it is when two people from different nationalities speak broken English to each other. At the Chinese restaurants, the people that work there often have to talk to Mexican customers. I giggle inside every time. Not that I am making fun of them, just that it must be a pain.

Satire: Where Windows is Going

It won't be long now before Microsoft owns the word windows. What this means to us is that we can no longer refer to the plural of the word "window" without paying royalties. Microsoft will quickly force Webster, etc., to remove the plural offering in the dictionary for "window" and add a separate entry: windows (win - doze): n. Superset of various operating systems developed by Microsoft Corporation.
