MySpace on Cingular

When I posted this, I was listening to: The Bleeding Alarm - Sorrows The Seas Of My Hearts

MySpace on Cingular phones? Tom made the official announcement today. Is it worth a damn, though?

Latest Update: Dec 20, 1:00pm PST

We've just launched an exclusive mobile application for Cingular cell phones. Get this app and you'll be able to edit your profile, view and add friends, read mail, and upload photos, all from your cingular cel [sic] phone!

Signing up is easy. Click here to get started or text MYSPACE to 386 (FUN) on your Cingular phone!

Yeah, yeah. Helio has been doing this awhile on their don't-call-it-a-phones. Cingular seems to think they've done a better job, as the service costs an extra $2.99 per month just to have it. If you want to use it, it'll cost you per kilobyte.

It is a Java application that allows the user to post, read, and comment blogs; manage his profile; manage, browse, and comment friends; create bulletins; and manage messages. Presumably, this Java application will also make Myspace look and function better, as it probably uses an API to get the data. Is it worth $2.99 (plus data charges) every month to have a possibly less buggy and more managed MySpace user experience? I don't think so.

All is not lost, however. If you still want to use MySpace while you are on the go, point your phone's built-in browser to mini.opera.com. Once you get there, you can download and install Opera Mini, which will allow you to surf the web much better than most built-in browsers (Nokia's N Series excluded for certain). Point Opera Mini to MySpace and login like normal. The interface isn't as managed, and the same bugs might arise as when browsing normally; however, it will only cost you normal data charges.

Hopefully, Cingular's pay-for-MySpace experiment will fail miserably and they can give away the software to Cingular subscribers (i.e. offer it as a reason to burn data instead of trying to double charge subscribers). Until then, there are alternatives. So, don't sweat it.
