San Diego ComiCon

When I posted this, I was listening to: Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is

Katy and I drove down to the ComiCon at the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday, July 22nd, 2006.

We left Sherman Oaks around 10:15 AM. It was supposed to be a two hour drive. Traffic was bad, which doubled the drive time. Once we got to San Diego, we drove around for half an hour trying to find parking. Eventually, we ended up at the Padre Parcade, which was less than a mile from the convention center. Since it was a parking deck instead of a parking lot, the car stayed cool all day. Contrary to popular belief, San Diego is not 70° year-round.

We walked over to the convention center. Once there, we discovered that the line we had to wait in to get our badges wrapped almost all the way around the convention center. As we walked around, some guy said it took him an hour to get as far as he had gotten — about 100 feet. Once we got to the end, we decided we'd wait an hour to see how far the line had moved. If we hadn't made significant progress, we'd give up.

Whatever was constipating the line broke free shortly after we got there. Within 50 minutes, we were getting our badges and searching for something to satisfy our hunger. We scored some frozen mochas (aren't those called frappicinos?) and went downstairs into the exhibition rooms.

As I walked in, I saw Lou Ferrigno, from the television show The Hulk. I got a good laugh. We quickly realized that as we moved towards the ends of the room, the display were less impressive. So, we headed back to the center.

We also quickly realized that all the cool stuff was in the other room. So, we went there. That's where all the major displays were, including Marvel Comic, Image Comics, FX, Sony Playstation, and more. There wasn't really anything spectacular, though.

After walking end to end two or three times, we decided we'd seen all we cared to see. We left the convention center, grabbed some food by the car, and headed home. In two hours, we were back in Sherman Oaks, welcomed by 110° weather.

I enjoyed the company more than the event. I've been out of comics for so long that I'm not really interested in the scene. Needless to say, I probably won't be going to the San Diego ComiCon next year.
