Richard Dawkins And Other Stuff

When I posted this, I was listening to: H.I.M. - For You (Intro)

My first inclination is that this week didn't hold many events, but some stuff did happen.

I've been working on a new version of Edu-Search at work all week. It's nice because all I am doing is design work (no real PHP) at the moment. To boot, I got the go-ahead to do the site in Flash. So, I'm getting back into that. I'm just having a hard time breaking out of my minimalist roots to do flashy / fun things to impress potential clients. I'll get there eventually. It'd be easier to design a personal site in it (I will for my portfolio version 3, I think).

I spent a good portion of this weekend reading a few of Richard Dawkins' essays and interviews. I read some of his stuff in the Philosophy of Evolution class I took at UA. I wasn't really interested, since reading Darwin's stuff was as painful as pulling my fingernails off with pliers. For some reason I decided to look him up. Anyway, I originally viewed Dawkins as a philosopher. That was how he was presented... fighting the evil Michael Behe and the Legion of Creationism. Well, having read some more, he's not a philosopher... at least not if he doesn't HAVE to be. He dabbles in it to help get his point across. But, I guess he is a logical / critical thinker, so there has to be a bit of philosopher in him anyway. Nevertheless, he is an evolutionary biologist. He seems quite accessible (unlike Darwin that is clearly scientific reading), which made reading his stuff refreshing.

I guess I came to this conclusion about Dawkins job after reading his response in an interview with a Christian to a question about morality. He basically said, that morality is not provable like evolution. So, he doesn't really know. He's got some ideas, but they are far from a solid philosophical view. At first, I thought it was a novel approach. I'm not into ethics, so I don't care. But I later decided he was saying, I'm not a philosopher unless I have to be, so I don't deal with ethics. As he said in the Think Tank interview when discussing flagellum, But I'm not the best person equipped to think about it because I'm not a biochemist. I think that is similar to what he meant about ethics. If you want to read some of his stuff, Infidels.org's Richard Dawkins page has links to quite a few essays / interviews / etc. I started a new section on my bookmarks page dedicated to good philosophy reads. I posted two of his links there.

I also bump up my work out routine tomorrow. Six weeks ago, I started with 20 lbs dumbbells. I picked up some 30 lbs ones yesterday. Four weeks ago, I started jogging two miles a day, M-F. Tomorrow, I start three miles. Bryan, our sales guy, said my arms look bigger. I think that means something when A guy tells you that. They aren't always looking. So, if a guy notices a guy, there must be a pretty decent change. So, good for me.

Anyway, there may be more stuff (e.g. Anna wanting copies of my Marilyn Manson CDs) that was interesting, but it's getting late.
